Astronomy Event

Last week, Glebe hosted our very first Astronomy Evening. Organised by Mr Larrive, we were delighted to welcome members of the Orpington Astronomical Society, who generously gave their time and expertise to facilitate the event. They set up a range of impressive telescopes and specialist equipment and guided attendees through how they work and what they could expect to observe in the night sky. Their enthusiasm and immense knowledge made the evening even more enjoyable.

Although the original date had to be postponed due to unfavourable weather conditions, we were fortunate that the following evening brought clear skies and excellent viewing conditions. The decision to reschedule paid off and attendees were treated to crisp, bright views of the Moon and a number of fascinating celestial objects.

The event was extremely well attended with over 50 students, parents/carers and staff joining. It was wonderful to see so many families learning together, asking questions and sharing their excitement. For our GCSE Astronomy students, it was a chance to put theory into practice - despite school trips to observatories, it's hard to look at the stars during the day! For many of our other students, it was their first opportunity to look through a professional telescope, an experience that sparked curiosity and awe in equal measure.
